Thanks for all the answers. Here's how I finally changed it:

1. I switched off the AC using the controls inside my home. The air filter was in the attic, for my central air conditioner.
2. There was a small metal door on the unit, held together with a screw.
3. For some reason, there were 2 strips of duct tape down the edges of the door - I had to remove the screw and peel off the tape.
4. After I pulled off the door, I removed the old air filter and inserted the new one.
5. The new air filter had markings along the edge, pointing to the direction of air flow. There was a marker at the side of the filter door pointing to the direction of air flow on my unit. I made sure that both arrows aligned.
6. I closed the door, put the screw on and re-applied the tape.
7. Switched on the AC - I don't know if the air actually feels cleaner, or its just wichful thinking.

Thanks!

Window unit, it is in the front below the Blow Vents. Central Unit it is usually at the Unit where the Air Intake is, inside the house. Sometimes it under so you may have to get down and look. It may be gone too if it a Rent house/apartment. Remove and Replace with same size. They usually slide out or have clips that hold them, may need a flashlight for a Central Unit.

It depends on the air conditioner that you have. Most window or wall units have a screen that you pull out and spray off with water. Central air units are screen filters in the cold air intake duct. You would have to unscrew the metal screen cover from the wall to access it.

Window units the plastic cover will come off take the filter off either spray it off or measure it and go to walmart and get another one. You can cut the filter to fit if they don't have one that is your size. Good Luck
