Thanks for all the answers. Here's how I finally changed it:
1. I switched off the AC using the controls inside my home. The air filter was in the attic, for my central air conditioner.
2. There was a small metal door on the unit, held together with a screw.
3. For some reason, there were 2 strips of duct tape down the edges of the door - I had to remove the screw and peel off the tape.
4. After I pulled off the door, I removed the old air filter and inserted the new one.
5. The new air filter had markings along the edge, pointing to the direction of air flow. There was a marker at the side of the filter door pointing to the direction of air flow on my unit. I made sure that both arrows aligned.
6. I closed the door, put the screw on and re-applied the tape.
7. Switched on the AC - I don't know if the air actually feels cleaner, or its just wichful thinking.
Thanks!
