Just as after a war we have at least 2 sides that admit to some people and their actions, there are 2 groups that recorded the life of Jesus that did not get along. So, as good as we can and for all it matters, I have every reason to believe the man we now call Jesus walked the earth about 2000 years ago. As to him being special in any way like walking on water etc, this is all fables. The man was a form of mystic, tribal Witch Doctor with a power lust. His teachings conflict with reality, and the very concept of a moral commandment is a contradiction. Today, with modern recording equipment, there is a real shortage of burning bushes that talk, or women that turn into pillars of salt.

On one side, there is faith. You believe in a god, and you believe that people like Jesus existed. You don't question it. There are a few historical records that do back up the fact that Jesus existed.
On the other side, you look at most historical records and facts. Jesus' hometown nazareth didn't exist in 1st century AD. The shroud of turin came from the 14th century. The new testament had alot of contradictions.
Its really comes down to your answer to the question "Is the bible true?" Since theres not enough hardcore concrete evidence to prove it either way (although both sides like to say they do have evidence) there are different answers. Hence, some people believe he existed, some don't.
NOTE: I am speaking as if you asked if he was the messiah or not and existed in that way. According to all historical records, there was a person who the bible is refering to, but whether or not he was holy is up to interpetation.

The same way people will know you were on earth after you're gone... through records and personal testamony. There are many recorded documents, (besides the Bible), that affirm his life here on earth.

There is a lot of historical record that he existed as a man, beyond just the Bible. The question is whether or not he was the Son of God.

That believe goes hand in hand with being a Christian. It is based on having faith, albeit blind faith. We just have to accept some things without concrete evidence.

No doubt Jesus was on earth...
The real question is:
Does it make any difference to you?
If it doesn't, look for guidance somewhere else.

Same way I believe that Shakespeare existed, try to prove him without using his writings either.
