The mindset and morality of a nation are probably one of the biggest casualties of years of warfare. "War weariness" on one side causes an uncertain future outlook for the average person, with increasing jaded pro-nationalism on the other side. The moral center rots from within, as one side turns to the escapism that is extreme radical left and the far right twists their normal religous and national sentiment into perverted thoughts of massacre and torture.
Meanwhile, the State itself must turn into a police State, both to clamp down on protest and truth and to suspend freedom, which is the basis of patriotic sentiment. This betrays both sides equally.

I would say that war is a statement that a nation makes to everyone watching, about what it believes in.
War is basically the most profound action a nation can take with another nation of conflicting views thus exposing its opinions and views to be judged by a world that may or may not truely understand the viewpoint being expressed.
I would say the price paid is the judgement of the world.

The soldiers, of course, pay a high price - those who die and those who live through it. Society also pays a price; wars always change the countries involved, even those parts that aren't directly involved. Lastly, the rest of the world can change; look at how the view of America has changed between 2001 and now.
