Cholesterol is a type of fat important as a precursor to the synthesis of many essential steroid hormones in the body (including sex hormones, cortisol and aldosterone) as well as being important in stabilising cell membranes.
Your body will synthesize more than enough cholesterol for its own needs every day regardless of your diet.
It is transported in the blood by complexes known as lipoproteins.
Lipoproteins vary in composition depending on the content of protein, cholesterol and long chain fatty acids (triglycerides).
Low density lipoproteins generally have a high fat content and carry fats from gut to liver and around the body. These are often referred to as LDLs and represent an abundance of fat content that other cells will also take up and utilise. Hence LDL Cholesterol if often seen as "bad cholesterol" as it delivers more cholesterol to your body cells. High density lipoproteins, on the other hand, tend to have a lesser fat content and are thought to help reduce cellular fat content as the collect fats and often return to the liver for redistribution.
High levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased incidence of athersclerotic disease, the main cause of heart attacks, angina, strokes and peripheral vascular disease.
Hence, generally a low cholesterol reduces the risks but more importantly, the ratio of TOTAL cholesterol (TC) to HDL cholesterol (ie the TC:HDLchol ratio) should be low.
This can be measured and used, along with your age, sex, smoking history, family history and presence or absence of diabetes, to gauge your risk of future atherosclerotic disease.
Various drugs are now established as treatments to block the production of cholesterol (the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, eg simvastatin) and reduce your risk of significant vascular disease.
Like all drugs they have side effects but if you are in a relevant risk group it is worth taking them as the overalll benefit in risk reduction is considered to be in your favour.
Does this help?

Cholesterol comes in good and bad forms.

The bad clogs the arteries and restricts bloodflow leading to raised blood pressure and heart attacks.

Sterols are now widely given to reduce the bodies uptake of cholestrol and it has now been found that these sterols can also reduce the build up in the arteries.

Diet plays a big part in choleterol build up. Best to severely reduce red meat intake and go for fish and chicken with salad or vegetables.

Bad cholesterol becomes like fat that makes deposits in your circulatory system. Those deposits form what is refered to as plaque. This plaque can build up to the point of making a blockage thereby causing stroke, heart attack or death of the affected area. Good cholesterol prevents the bad from forming these plaques.
