I have a toshiba laptop with minimal storage and really I just want to save some space on my little desk and get rid of this obese monitor without having to buy a flat screen. I figure that I can use the pc as the external storage and save my space on my laptop which I rarely use now.

You need a network. A wireless network is probably the best, so your notebook can be portable. You will need to set up the network on the PC and you will need to keep the monitor in case something goes wrong, but you can stick it in a closet or something.

If you get PC Anywhere, and a network connection, then you can control the PC from your laptop. You can run virus and adware scans, defragment your computer, or do anything else you want. That will let you kiss the monitor good-bye!

It might just be simpler to get an external hard drive. You can network the 2 computers and share drives but you will need to keep the monitor for the desktop because you would need to see the screen some times.
