An example of this would be cutting off a driver that cut you off just to "get back at them and show them who's boss"?

No, I don't feel like I win when I return a favor - I feel that I am even, i have no outstanding debt. When I return the favor of low behavior, I am just angry when I am doing it though I might regret it later (like when you go to cut that driver off who did it to you - all you can see is red while you are doing it, but when they hit you, that's when you really regret it).

It is always best to curb our baser instincts - not so much for the idiot who deserves the lesson, but for ourselves. Don't you find that once you give your self permission to behave this way, it is harder to keep it under control? It gets to be so easy to just react. I have found it to be so, but I have also found that the more I keep my temper under control the more strength i have to do so - which is a real help later in life when you have kids and whatever else that makes you mad and you need to keep your temper under control.

Peace!

I dont think thats a good example, since it was not a "favor" to cut you off in the first place. sounds like an asshole.

I did when I was younger. But now I'd rather be happy than be "right" or "win". If I cut off that driver, but the police only saw my action and not his, who wins? Or if my action resulted in an accident (esp. if an uninvolved party was injured), who wins?

I try not to think of the outcomes of my behavior in win or lose terms. Winning and losing are synonymous with good and bad and these are only human constructs. I would like to be able to transcend these things...

...but, alas, I'm human.
