It's not enough to say that all living things contain carbon, or that they aquire energy from an outside source, or that they reproduce. There's a lot of grey area in this question, and no one straight answer. For example, you could argue that living things contain cells and aquire energy from an outside source. But cancer meets both of those requirements. Is cancer alive? You could say that living thinsg reproduce, but what about a person or animal that can not reproduce due to illness or physical conditions? Are they alive? Is a person with has no higher brain function but has a heart beat and is breathing alive? The truth is, there's no clear-cut answer. There's grey area no matter where you go.

There is not a definitive answer on this. However, scientists have mostly come to an agreement on two things. Living things use energy (have metabolism), and reproduce. Therefore, the simplest unit of life is a cell. Cells both reproduce and use energy. On the other hand, viruses are not living even though they are very complex. Viruses reproduce, but they do not use energy. Viruses use the energy of their host cell.

ALL living things, Plants and Animals, have ONE thing in common I KNOW! They have Carbons in them. Also, they emit life from their very BEING. And the Plants give life to animals through their vegetation, and the animals fertilize the plants by the excretions from unused portions of the plants, along with the processed parts of the plant, that go back into the Earth.

The characteristics of living thing depends on what kind of living things. If you mean a plant, then its characteristics are different than an animals. I got an answer though from http://www.resa.net/nasa/biology_systematics.htm.
Hope this helps. :)
