Yes/no answers to this question demonstrate a lack of though regarding this question.
The answer is "it depends" - old laptops can be fine for basic web surfing and writing documents and such. For playing DVDs on a plane, playing high-end games, video editing, or similar tasks, the answer is generally no.
The amount of memory included is a consideration, but by no means should it be a deciding factor - in the vast majority of cases, a laptop - refurbished or new - can have the RAM upgraded.
The biggest concern about refurbished laptops is that there was once PROBABLY a problem. If that problem was "intermittant" and not found by the manufacturer after it was returned, then you could end up with it. My general rule of thumb is get it if it has a 3 year warranty - then it (to some extent) doesn't matter because you can get it repaired/replaced if there is a problem.

The best refurbished laptop would be one you can check out for yourself. Hands on.
Like the others said, does it have an O/S? How much Ram?
Hard drive the size you need or might need.
Is this computer a short term need until you can get a better one?
With computers coming down in price all the time, it might be better to get one from Best Buy or one on the other discount electronics stores where you can possibly open a charge account and get a warranty for your computer.
What guarantee can you get on a refurb?

I looked into refurbs a few years ago. Most came without OS. When I added in cost of OS and any extra was within a few hundred dollars of a state of the art computer with more then a 30 day warranty.
