That would be World of Warcraft or Everquest I would imagine.
On the other hand, Chess and Backgammon have been played a lot online for a very long time and Poker is really popular right now.

Battlefield 2. That's the most famous one. But depending on your personal preferences, you may like other games. If you like first person shooters, try battlefield 2. Or Battlefield 2142 when it comes out. If you like mass multi player rpgs, try World of Warcraft or City of Heroes. If you don't want to pay monthly, try Maplestory or Runescape. I like 'em all really.

Second Life. The level of detail involved in constructing your avatar alone is outstanding. Also, the games teaches you incredible amounts about programing.
