fender and gibson both have cheap ones in a special series, you can usually pick one up for under$200. try your local music store, they are all jap, but they play ok.

bear naked is right... no such thing as a good cheap guitar, i would say a non american made stratocaster would be a good start. plan on spending 300. to 400.00 $ easy to find, easy to play, but not a total piece of crap.

I think it was KMart, maybe Target.
