Before independence, most of the population was Spanish or indigenous.

Starting mid-19th century, Argentina became a destination of massive European immigration. Most of them came from Spain and Italy, with a sizable percentage of other nationalities such as French and those of Eastern Europe. They ventured out to escape war, famine and other catastrophes at home, only to learn that they were out of the frying pan into the fire. Unable to go home, these men settled around Buenos Aires. They vied for attention from women, who were highly outnumbered.

Hence the saying "Argentinians came from the boats".

Argentina is one of the mixed countries. The initial Native Americans were token over by the Spanish than the Brits won them from Spain.
