Understand, anything you buy will be subject to a failure rate. The idea is to get the product with the lowest failure rate. Apple is usually up there (but anyone can have a bad line once in a while - not saying they have, but they could).
When it comes to buying a laptop, I'd say you can buy from anyone, keeping in mind these rules:
1. 3 Year Warranty - do not buy a laptop without one. While they have become more modular, they still contain very specialized parts that are neither cheap to replace or easy to buy at the local computer shop - this is your version of insurance that if something happens, you can get it repaired (note, they often do not cover stupidity and accidents - testing if your laptop can support a cars weight or accidentally dropping it down stairs will not be covered in most cases).
2. Buy a major brand. If you've never heard of them, they aren't a major brand. If you have, but your friends haven't (your NON-TECHIE friends), then they are not a major brand. You want a major brand who will be around to honor the warranty for its duration and an otherwise "common" product that can be easily repaired by a professional even after the warranty period (computers today can have a useful life of 7+ years, unlike computers 7 years ago, depending of course on what you do with it).
3. Call support before you buy - a couple of times. Find out how long you'll have to wait to get through if there's a problem.
Now all that said, I do NOT like sony laptops (as stylish as they are) because they (as of the last time I bought one) only offered a 90 day warranty - unless you registered with them. And their support (at the time - 3+ years ago) was awful - it took a month to convince them I needed to send the notebook back for repairs and another month before they sent it back to me, repaired.
If you want to use MacOS your choice is simple - buy an Apple - they are the only systems that can run MacOS. If you run Windows, you may still be able to buy a mac as the newer ones use Intel CPUs and I believe (verify this first) they are now allowing Macs to run Windows if you want.
Dell is fine, as is Lenovo. I don't like HP or Sony. relatively little experience with Toshiba and Gateway lately (though I'd feel more comfortable about gateway today than 5 years ago).
You're limiting yourself if you only want to spend $700 because the 3 year warranty is often an additional $150-$300 - but again, this is a vital part of any new laptop, as far as I'm concerned. There are some around, but they can be found if you look hard enough. Up the range to 900 and you'll have an easier time.

If you want a good laptop for under $700, I recommend the Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP. The screen is oversized, which is nice. The laptop isn't too heavy. It has got a generous amount of RAM--always nice--as well as a large amount of ROM. Good stuff. The 1.30 gigahertz processor is nice and fast, comparatively speaking. You can get an internal wireless with it at that price range too. You can also get a read/write CD/DVD drive. It's hard to beat these specs in the $700 range.

I got this really cool laptop I could sell you. It's a P-2 but really fast. I paid like $600 for it like 5 years ago (it was used) and I really really loved it. Problem is that it needs a new power source.

Dell is absolutely the best to have I think. You can try e-bay and bidding on one, they have some up there that are brand new and sealed in the box!
