After buying a Nintendo DS for my son, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it has WiFi capabilities, and there are stations that you can go to in order to play other online gamers for free. My sons favorite is McDonalds. We sit and eat and then he plays the game afterwards. Most times he loses, but since he's a good sport, he has fun. Other locations are some local libraries. Don't worry about money, you play in safe locations and it's free. To find out your nearest free locations, go to the Nintendo.com website and look up WiFi and you will find a link that will bring up a page that allows for you to place your address or any cross street in order to show you the nearest stations in your area. Hope I've helped anyone looking to use their Nintendo DS for online play.
