I have been playing the horn for a number of years.
The french horn is the hardest brass instrument to play.
There will be times you will get frustrated, the day before you will sound good then the next day sound bad.
You will have to practice a minimum of 30 min a day
Yamaha makes a mute called the “silent system” I can practice all hours of the day and night, and not disturb anyone, it’s basically an electronic muffler, with ear hones, I find it great.

A good book for any French horn player is “Art of French Horn Playing” by Philip Farkas
It covers every aspect about the French horn, but most important, covers techniques on how to hold the horn, blowing, lip positions, practice exercises.

Good luck and practice, it will take time ( usually 3 months before you start, to sound like a horn, provided you do not have any bad habits).

A little secret do not practice high notes above your ability, it will tire your lips, you want to gain endurance first, being able to play 30 min of more non stop without tiring your lips.
Best of luck and have fun.
