Would really love to do a base jump but from what I understand Norway is pretty much the only Country in western europe/ the world that it is actually legal to do it in. Would I have to be an experienced parachutist to do this and if so how do i become experienced without it either costing me a small fortune or joining the armed forces. Or am i just completely mad for wanting to attempt such a thing.? Answers on a postcard please.

Base Jumping is the most dangerous sport around today - I remember hearing that approximately 1 in 5 regular base jumpers die base jumping (hence why it's illegal just about everywhere). It's not something you should enter into lightly at all! I've only heard of one school that would actually teach base jumping, and they required a minimum of 500 previous solo parachute jumps! So long story short, yes you would need to be a very experienced parachutist - and it won't cost you a small fortune to get there it’ll be a big one!!

I made 2 jumps from the New River Gorge bridge back in the 80s. It is only legal one day per year in October on "Bridge Day". Even if you are experienced at jumping from planes, it is different to jump into dead air. The tendency is to go head down. Until you get used to the launch, you should initially focus on the horizon to keep your body flat relative to the ground. I would recommend this New River bridge as the place for you to start. Its pretty safe as far as base jumps go. Its almost 900 ft high and allows for a 3-5 second delay before initiating your pull sequence. There is also nothing to hit if your parachute opens off heading (occasionally there are people hanging on ropes). You have to make sure you know how to pack for an on heading opening every time and further be sure that you will be stable immediately after launching before you should progress to other type structures. An off heading opening off an antennae or cliff could lead to a wall strike or contact with a support wire or the antennae itself. Good luck and Blue Skies.

i know that it is illegal in most places and it is really dangerous make sure you learn from an experienced BASE jumper people die and break bones in it if you don't do it correctly- be safe and have fun (not advising anyone does it)
