No. It's more expensive because of advertising and marketing.
Many store brand detergents are manufactured to similar standards and clean just as well. Try different discount brands and when you find one that you like, stick with it.

I can't tell you what works best for cleaning clothes, because I and my brother apparently are allergic to most detergents OTHER THAN Tide. We each discovered this when we went off to college, bought our own (no doubt bargain-priced) laundry soap, and developed icky rashes..... Mom had been using Tide for so long I think she'd forgotten why. I've made the experiment a few times since then, and the same thing has proven true.
It may be that Tide rinses better than some other detergents (hence is less irritating to the skin). That could explain why it might fare more poorly than some others in "direct contact" allergen tests and still be less allergenic (if it generally is so--rather than, say, its being the case that my brother and I simply have a rare immuno-Tide issue). Another respondent to your question wrote of working in a second-hand shop and being able to tell what clothing was washed in good detergent. It may be that detergents that rinse well also cause less wear-and-tear to the clothing. (Think of what happens to fabric when you bleach it...).
Of course, I'm *speculating*--big time! Don't know if Tide rinses better than others. Just know I and my little bro are not allergic to it, as we are to everything else qua laundry soap; and there's a way of tying that fact together with the thought that better soaps preserve clothing better........
happy questing

My friend's dad works on washing machines and dryers for a living. He has told her and anyone that would listen, that one key element to many problems with washing machines is Tide detergent. He says the ingredients or make up of Tide eats the parts up in the machine and causes them to errode.
I am not sure if this is true or not. But I do know he has nothing to gain by saying that. For that reason I do not use Tide. I cannot afford another bill like that.
I have heard from someone that the new Tide pen is great but I am leary as it is the same stuff.

I owned a RESALE clothing store for years. I could tell you by
just looking at the clothes what kind of detergent the people
used. It makes a HUGE difference to use a good detergent.
Bargin brands just don't compare in this situation.

Not for me ... Tide gives me hives ( highly allergic ). We stick with Arm & Hammer or an off brand. We mix inexpensive detergents with OxyClean ... THAT'S a product we swear by !!

I love Tide and always thought it was. However, I just read in Consumers report that it isn't - that Costco's name brand, Kirkland Signature is just as good as Tide!

No. In fact, it has the highest rate of allergic reaction among users of any other laundry detergent.
Don't believe the hype.
