There is a string/cord in the bathtub/shower area in all european hotel bathrooms. The sign above it says "alarm".

due to political correctness gone mad...
so that the vulnerable ones can call for help from the bathroom incase something happens to them..
like maybe if they fall down in the loo etc....
crazy if you ask me!!

Funny - isn't it. Many think this is a clothes line to dry your clothes from. Big mistake! It is simply an alarm should some clumsy or tired traveler fall while bathing or showering. I guess it replaces the I've fallen & can't get up alarm that they advertise on tv! Honestly, I've always been tempted to give it a try....
