My daughter left school last week,so she hasnt got to get up early for anything. But since she has, she has been getting on average about 11 hours of sleep a night.
she used to get up about 6:00am everyday for school, and always complained about being tired.
She now doesnt get until 10:00 or 11:00, but since she has she has been more happy, is it normal to sleep this long?

well, im 17 and i can get up to 12 hours of sleep if i dont need to go anywhere...but if i have college or anything like that, i can instantly wake up and go - i think most teenagers sleep a lot because i have herd of many who get up at about 1 o clock in the afternoon...now that would be worrying...we just relax a lot more and everyone is a lot happier if they are not sleep deprived :)

Yes! Kids do it all the time. Sleeping late in the summertime is a great way for kids to decompress from the stress of the school year, and if you can remember what it was like to be in school, summer seemed like it would never come. Look for this to wear off in a few more weeks, by then she'll be getting bored and will want to really be a part of summer activities. If she doesn't start waking up after 9 hours of sleep in the next few weeks, it could be a sign of something more problematic, like depression.

I didn't wake up until 12 today and I went to bed at 1am.
11 hours of sleep is definitely normal for a teenager.

I'd ensure she's getting a multi-vitamin WITH IRON tablet every morning and evening, and make sure she gets on schedule of 8-9 hours sleep a night, or she'll never manage to cut it in the real world.

As a teenager myself I can tell you that not all of us would sleep that late. I like to get up to work and make money to pay for stuff. But many teenagers sleep so much because they always drink and have sex when awake. Also if they are fat or lazy they tend to be more sleepy.

Yes it is normal. Don't worry, it just a faze. I'm going through that right now. I thought that something was going on with me but I asked my uncle whom is a doctor and he said it's perfectly normal so I had a sigh of ease. It's just that we are growing faster and also developing faster than adults, and we need a lot of neveres and also, brain cells because if we dont we'll go mad. lol. So nothing's wrong with your daughter.

My lad's the same, he's bright, cheerful and energetic when he's up so its not depression but would hibernate if i let him. Its partly their age and partly the relief of finishing a stressful time. If she's happy she's ok. It'll be September soon enough, let them have a break. Its their last few years before adult responsibilities take over.

Oh, yes! I remember sleeping for England at that age, much to my Mum's disgust!
I earned the nick name cold start amongst others.
Please let her carry on for now, they'll plenty of times when she'll have to get up early.... like when she starts work.
