I am thinking of going away in the first two weeks of September. First to Rome for a week, then to either Madrid or Barcelona...but which one?

I have been to Barcelona before in 2001, but didn't have the best of weekends there, and have always wanted to 'put this right.'

However, I haven't been to Madrid before, and visiting a completely new city always gives me a buzz. It is a place which has always intrigued me.

Which one should I go for?

Barcelona is truly unique and a world class city, but I'd still opt for Madrid due to it's culture, museums and a side trip to Toledo (one of the greatest ancient towns in the world).

If you don't know Madrid, it's better that city, cause always it's better to know other place... and in Madrid there are a lot of things to do and monuments and museums to see. near Madrid (1 hour +-) are small cities like Toledo, Avila or Segovia very very beautiful

well then you've answered your own question . . I personally would remain in Italy, go to Naples, Ischia, Capri, Sorrento, it's beautiful that time of year plus the food is amazing . . . why would anyone want to go to spain, there's NOTHING to eat there?
