Installations are cool. Installations are a room or an atmosphere that is set up in a way that works around the art. Usually multiple art pieces carry the same theme and are all connected in content. The purpose of an installation is when you walk into one, it's like you are entering another world. You are not only looking into a window of an artist world, but actually walking around it.

Installations are usually more complex to build then most other art mediums, because most senses are to be applied. Sound, light, temperature, etc. all to create the mood and world the artist is trying to achieve.

I know an artist who does installations and an installations she has done is when she got a bunch of grocery bags and stuffed them with more grocery bags and tied then together and bundled them up in a gallery. Bags were piled on the wall, on the ceiling, floor, etc. And she had a recording that repeatably says; "Thank you, have a nice day" "Thank You, Please come again" etc. That was it. I can't remember the reason for this installation, but interpretation is the eye of the beholder.

Look up the artist Tony Oursler, he's a well-known artist of this time, and he as done many installations. This will give you a visual idea of installations.
