Why is there always something hanging out of the drivers side window of empty pulled over cars?

Every time I drive by a car that has been abandoned there is something like a white shirt or whatever rolled up but hanging out of the drivers side window. Just trying to figure out why. Maybe someone else has noticed this.

I have heard that that is a signal to "send help".

However, the source URL says this:

"If you have car trouble, signal for help by raising the hood or tying a handkerchief to the door handle."
