I guess it is the same sort of reason that cats play with a mouse or bird they catch. They face no risk of being harmed and little of losing their catch. Hones their skills perhaps. As someone else said for fun.

I seen on the discovery channel they do play with a seal to teach the young how to trap and kill their food. Sometimes its a group effort, kinda like a pack of lions- teaching survival I guess.....

they beat them to death that way and make them more complacent or able to be eaten. It's definitely not playing with them. They do it to big full grown seals too. Not pretty to watch and really horrible to hear.
