The osmotic pressure of the solution is directly related to the Molarity of the sugar
the simplified equation is :

p = M.R.T

where
p is the osmotic pressure (in atm)
M is the molarity of sugar in the solution (mol/L)
R is the gas constant (0.082 L.atm/mol.K)
T is the temperature (in Kelvins)

therefor if you measure the osmotic pressure of the sulotion, you actually know the sugar level in it
(you can use an osmometer to measure the osmotic pressure, take a look at this link for more info on osmometer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmometer )
