I am almost certain that you would have to purchase a third party software program to accomplish this. Here are some ideas.

But I would just google to see what is out there and then make sure you make good judgements.

Are you talking about a network shared folder? Or do you want to protect the folder from other users on the computer? If you do, then each person that signs on will have different permissions for the files the create. If you want a folder with a password that does not depend on NTFS security, there is a work around.

Right click where you want the new folder and select NEW > COMPRESSED (ZIPPED) FOLDER. A new ZIP folder will be created. Place the files you want to password protect in the ZIP folder. Open the ZIP folder and select FILE > Add a password. Type the password and confirm. The files WILL be visible to anyone that opens the folder. But if they open a file, they will be prompted for a password.

This is the way to do this in XP without a third party program.

XP has no such option. You can however protect your files or folders if you so wish. You can do this by setting your account a password first & then windows will be asking you if you want your files protected. You say yet (in the dot box) & your files are protected.

BUT

This holds goods for only your "My Documents" folder. Not any other folder. XP Pro has no option to protect any folder so don't think it does & assume it does. Even thsi is not failsafe & foolproof so don't trust it blindly.

XP does offer the NTFS partition which calls for encrypted file system which is definitely safe. My advise is that you don't opt for the "Encrypt Files" option in the file properties. Should you ever format your disk you will never be abl to retrieve the file you encrypted.

My advise is that you try third party applications for this.
