Issues often are not as two dimensional as the politicians would have us think because the final decision affects more than one group of people or groups. The role of the media is to provide information on the issue and how it affects everyone involved. The media's duty is to report on all aspects of an issue. No one member of the media will be unbiased, but in the aggregate there will be balance.
Our role is to research those issues thoroughly. That means getting our information from more than one source. Verify the facts provided. Something that has been stated as fact should have a source attached to it to provide a means of verifying that information. Of course that takes a lot of time, but it needs to be done to verify that your preferred sources are providing accurate facts.
Our role is then to determine that the facts are not only accurate, but that the facts are being presented in their proper context, especially quoted material. Anything which is presented other than fact is opinion. So we also need to determine that the facts, in the proper context, supports the stated opinions.
The other role of the media is to be a check on the government to keep it honest and transparent. That is not to mean that the media should be anti-government, only that the media should help weed out corruption, fraud, and waste in government. In the end the media is keeping the government accountable to the people.
The media keeps the government accountable, and in the end we are the ones who keep the media accountable. We are the ones who ultimately decide which members of the media are providing reasonable opinions supported with accurate facts and support them. Disregard those which cannot provide sources for the facts they claim. They will disappear eventually.
As for liberal vs. conservative control of the media it is pluralistic. There are differing points of view out there. Search them out. If the agenda appears to be controlled by the neocons, then perhaps it is because groups with opposing points of view are willing to debate those issues.

Simple, just look how the media resonds to the news and events and the spin they add to it. In the 1996 election the press touted the economy as Robust and the "best economy in 3 decades" unemployment hovered around 5.5 to 6 percent. Now the unemloyment rate is around 4.5 to 5.5 yet the media plays the song and dance that we are spiraling out of control. WMD's, there are quotes by almost every liberal politician about how we need to be pre-emptive right after 9-11 but nobody wants to look at that. Even waffle head John Kerry said there were WMD's and we need to take action. Now what about the WMD's we have found YES they are there, but you won't read about these on the front page. Now we have documents proving that Suddam was financing Alqueada. And what's with these new names NEOCON why must you continually make us conservatives out to be "evil" ooohhhh yes the evil conservative who want's better school for our kids and a safe America. How about liberalnazi or sociallib. No that's not appropriate liberal's are liberal's and conservatives are conservatives but the left has to resort to name calling and false truths usually because the facts aren't an their side. Let's face it if Bill Clinton was in power right now every thing would be painted rosey. But sniffeling, whiney little snots like Katey Currick who has'nt lived in reality since she got on the today show. She hasn't a clue about real life. But she thinks she knows what is best for you and I and so she spins stories the way she wants you to believe them. That is why news channels like FOX are growing so fast. they don't spin it they just tell it like it is. Also this isn't to say I agree with every thing that G. W. Bush does. At least when I do disagree with him it has more substance that him stumbling on a couple words in a speech. And then I make fun of him. Look at the facts not the BS spin that is why not only can I honestly tell you that the media leans left it is easily argued that it does.

wow ou must be a college student... did your english professor tell you that line of bs... anyway as we all know the liberals have controlled the majority of mainstream media as long as this country has had media, but especially in the 20th century. remember the sensationalist journalists during the roosevelt admin.,..
things like foxnews are refreshing just to have a different point of view out there, but the left is still far in the lead as far as controlling what this country knows. look at that crap new york times did last week, and now trhey came out a d say they are better than george bush for the country.... and some people actually take that newspaper seriously....

The worlds media is massive, and has as much left wing bias in it as right wing, you just need to look beyond your regular cable channels.
Try the BBC, thats about as left wing as you can get without putting a red star on the top of it.
Seriously, if you look you will find a counterbalance, but for the real truth you need to take a middle ground between all versions and for gods sake do not trust what people write as "fact" on the net.

It's interesting. When I listen to right leaning talk shows they swear that the media is controlled by the left and are just as adamant.
Means the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
Could it be a little to one side or the other? Sure, but probably not by much in most cases.
Are there extremists on both sides?
You bet.

Well, if I were blindly believing everything Sean Hannity, Bill O'Liely, Anne Coulter, Brit Hume, Rush Limbaugh, Tony Snow, Rupert Murdoch, Bob Novak, Pat Robertson, and the rest of those monkeys on Fox News said, then yes, I too would believe the media had a so-called "liberal" bias.
But as we all know the media has only one true bias - the money bias. They tell us only what lines their pockets.

Denial is a powerful thing.
Anyone who thinks otherwise need only look up Ann Coulter. In her words, "We own the media. We need to use it."
I guess we can take some small consolation in the fact that FauxNews is losing viewership. Maybe people have stopped drinking the koolaid?
