It's an 87 chevy s-10 with a 2.8

When going up a hill it started to loose "power". Now it has trouble whenever I push on the gas pedal until it finds the right "spot" if that makes sense.

The engine was changed from a 4cyl to a 2.8 before I bought it a year ago.

an '87 does not have a carb, it is Throttle Body Fuel Injection. your relay may be not working or the FI assemblies may be stopped up. you can replace the injectors by themselves and not have to replace the whole TBI assembly
OK the engine has been changed. Was the computer changed also? And it could possibly be the catalytic converter getting obstructed. Try disconnecting the exhaust from the manifold and cranking it. It will be louder than a Sherman tank, but it will run. I have had 2 vehicles that the cat.conv. became stopped up on and caused strange problems that did not appear to be related to the exhaust system.

If it's carbeurated, you can try cleaning the carb with an over the counter spray cleaner and follow the directions. Tighten all the mounting bolts to make sure that you don't have a vacuum, leak and check all vacuum hoses. Once all that's done, reset the air fuel mixture, by slowly closing first the air until the engine runs rough, or tries to stall, then open it 1 full turn. Do the same with the fuel adjusting screw. Next drive it and see it that helps.

Sounds to me like a TPS (throttle possition sensor)
On the side of TBI where the throttle linkage hooks up the is a rheostat the tells the computer what possition the throttle is in(how far the gas pedal is pushed). If the idle is OK, next time you drive it, when no cops or kids are around, try FLOORING it. That will put the TBI, and computer into a bypass mode and it tolls the injector to pump as much fuel as it can. If it runs great floored, and at idle, you will need to replace the TPS.

Does this engine have a computer
usually the V8 has one mounted beside the carb(throttle Body) looks like a little black box,,if so you must use the one for the engine you installed..

Depends on what the problem and symptons are . Are you confident that the problem is fuel related? need a lot more info than what you have shared so far.
