The closest star after the sun is infact Proxima Centauri (distance of ~ 4.22 ly). This star is located in the star system Alpha centauri, along with the stars Alpha Centauri A and B.

strictly speaking proxima centuri is the nearest star ( unless something else recently discovered ).
Alpha centauri is a triple star system; A, B, C. I suppose C is called proxima centauri.
the reason it was called by that name because of its proximity to the earth I assume.
Proxima centauri is the nearest star to us. Alpha centauri star system is the nearest star system to us. In that system star A is a called Alpha centauri and it is not nearest to earth.

Proxima Centauri. It is 4.21 light years from earth, although a recent discovery of a red dwarf star is said to be only 2.3 light years away

Alpha Centauri, and it has been found that it is actually a triple star system, not a single star.
