Please be cautioned that if you have any documents, images, or files of any type that you stored at any time on the computer in question, they will be accessible to whomever gets the computer if you only reinstall Windows or just reformat the hard drive. If you just reinstall Windows, Windows will not overwrite the "My Documents" directory, so if you saved your files in there guess what, they're preserved for all eyes to see. On the other hand, if you reformat the drive, a savvy user can use data recovery tools to read the data that was on the drive prior to reformatting. Not good either. So what does one do? If you're planning to get rid of the aforementioned system, then wipe the drive first. There are a number of products on-line, but I have used Wipe Drive by White Canyon with much success. Rather than just plopping down an allocation table which will corrupt some files, Wipe Drive will write over the entire disk with random characters so the underlying data is rendered unreadable. Then and only then are you starting with a clean disk to reinstall the OS and hand over the machine to a new owner without fear of handing over personal information too.

You need your OS disks or recovery disk, make sure you have your product key in hand. You'll need to know it. Note it could vary, depending upon what brand of computer you have, check your computers manual, it will give you the steps. Look the chapter that talks about reinstalling windows.

I go to school online and my computer is always freezing and crashing. Just reformat by using the CD's that came with the computer. It'll be like brand new.

Most of the newer name brand computers offer this option. The method varies by manufacture. Check their website for directions.

Depends on the computer. You could have recovery disks or a built in recovery partition. If your under warranty call tech support and have them go over the process for your specific computer.

If you have a PC running windows. During the startup process it will say "System Resore" press F10. Do just that. It will explain everything from there. Ive had to do that quite a few times. Stupid junk from the internet.......
Good luck!

You can perform a clean install, which generally includes a format of the hard disk. For additional information, reference:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
(Assuming you are using XP - you didn't say in the question).

Reformatting your hard drive and starting off with a new installation of windows... or whatever operating system you had. That will get you back to square one.
