It could very well be a timing belt with 98000 miles. I have worked in Chrysler dealerships for over 15 years. The check engine light probably came on because it jumped one tooth and caused it to run poorly and then died out. It still turns over as you said but I,ll bet it sounds funny doing so (spins fast and easy). Take it to a shop and have it checked out. And that engine is a free wheeling engine (it does not bend valves if the timing belt jumps) Good luck.

yes the timing belt sounds like it has broken. Only problem is that the engine free spins and hits your valves because you were cruising on the highway at a high rate of speed. Once the belt breaks, the valves no longer move up and down and then the piston will hit the valves. If this happens, then you will need to replace the cylinder head assembly. being the cars age and mileage, i would recomend you to begin searching for a new vehicle very soon.

Yes the timing belt went

On the Omni the belt should be changed every 70,000 miles to avoid breaking

If it is the timing belt your better off trading it in and just buying another car.
