Less than you think is original these days. The first thing I would do with any written original poems is mail a copy to yourself. When you receive the letter, do not open it. Put it away for safe keeping. If there is ever a discrepency over something you know you wrote, you can have a judge open the original document and look at the postmark and see when it was received. Postmarks are legal documentations. It creates a timestamp.

Yes, things are original. Every person has a different perspective, so one idea used by another person can be substantially different and original.
As to copyright, you have a copyright by virtue of having written the poetry. To protect it, make sure you put the word "Copyright" with the year and your name at the bottom of your poetry wherever it is printed. Use a c in a circle next to it (c in parenthesis will not fly with the copyright office).
To register your copyright, online is a good resource for the forms to fill out; just print them and submit them. www.copyright.gov. I believe the filing fee these days is about $30.00, and you will need to use one form per poem, and send a copy of the poem with the form.
Good luck.

It's important to be yourself, don't let anyone change you into something you don't want to be.
As far as copy-write, you can try registrar your poem with the writers guide of America. But I wouldn't worry, about anyone stealing your poem.
