I don't know anything about hansters but I do know a thing or two about hamsters.

Male hamsters will eat the young they are placed with because the babies are unknowningly disrupting his territory. Just as some male hamsters can't be placed with other male hamsters - some are just more territorial than others.

It's best for baby hamsters to be left in the care of their mother until they are old enough to fend for themselves or to be sold at the proper age.

If you have a hamster mom, remove any other hamsters that might be in the same cage. Daddy hamsters tend to eat babies, and sometimes other hamsters will too. Mom hamster will only eat her young if there is something seriously wrong with it or if she is incredibly stressed. If she does eat her young, just leave her alone. Do not ever remove hamster babies from mom, until they are old enough!!!! They will die without mom's warmth and mom's milk!

On a side note, hamsters (with the exception of some dwarf hamsters) should always be housed alone as adults. Hamsters are cannibalistic and can kill and eat eachother. Hamsters prefer to be alone and live alone in the wild.

This can sometimes happen if a newborn hamster is ill or injured, or even just because the mother hamster is stressed. It means the mother can use her energy raising only the healthy ones.

If you have a hamster with babies, try to leave it alone as much as possible so you don't cause it any stress.

(The answers above about removing the babies are incorrect. Only the father should be removed, not the mother. She should be left with the babies for a few weeks until they have finished weaning.)

Most of the time they do.
But my sisters hamster did not eat her young.here is some more info on that.

Why Hamster eat there young.

Hamsters eat their young for a number of reasons. The most common reason is that she feels threatened. Self-preservation will make her attack her young. (It's a WEIRD instinct to prevent suffering and poor survival likelihood for her children).

Mothers may also cannibalize their babies if there are a large number and they can't take care of them all. Sometimes it happens because she senses her babies aren't healthy.

Some mother hamsters are also just too young to cope with a litter, and some can never cope. You can increase your chances of the babies surviving by keeping the mother in a quiet, non-threatening environment.

Checking for Distress

On the 16th day of pregnancy, check your hamster for signs of distress, like lying on her side panting. Otherwise, allow her privacy to deliver her babies.

yes, they can.......alot of animals will eat their young, even cats and dogs.....rabbits especially.....they do it when there newborn are born defective, or if they are too weak to survive normally.....it is the animals way of protecting themselves and the surviving offspring......a defective newborn is more apt to be detected by predators, killing defective or ill offspring also ensures that enough food like mothers milk goes to only the offspring that can survive....

Yes they do. When your hamster has babies remove them as soon as possible or you will find out the hard way what happens.

Yes, especially if you touch the young and transfer your scent upon their skin or if they are defected in any way (i.e. missing leg, not nursing, underweight).

Sometimes, this is ussually done by mom if she gets very stressed or believes one of her children is very sick (sometimes dogs do this). If the dad does it (extremly rare) it is territorial.
