The most important aid for her is genuine desire to quit. If she really wants to stop and makes an iron clad commitment to stop then she will. If she does not commit to it then she will find a way to fail. That really is the hardest part, deciding that no matter what you are done with this poison forever.

You also might try getting her to go the cancer treatment center and see what her future is if she doesn't stop. Or to a respiratory therapist. Just asking her to go to these places with you may help wake her to to reality. 400,000 people die from this crap EVERY year in the U.S. alone. As an insurance guy I can tell you that the life insurance rates for tobacco users is almost double what it is for everyone else. That is an indication of the increased risk of mortality.

I found that using the nicotine gum helped me, since it gave me the oral gratification replacement to the cigarettes and helped me get out of the habit of reaching for the pack. And it left me in complete control of when I got my nicotine and how much I got. (Unlike the patch which is constantly leaching it into your system.)

I decided to use the gum as soon as I had even a tiny craving. I did not want to be "jonesing" all the time as I thought that would make it harder to succeed. (And this part may have been crazy but I did not throw away all my smokes, ashtrays, and lighters. I put them out of easy reach and out of sight but for me it was less psychological pressure. However, experts might tell you that this was a bad idea. It could have increased temptation for some people but for me it was a reminder of my determination to quit.)

Over the next week I found that I was chewing less and less of it. The last day I had only had one piece of gum all day. That day I decided that I was done with the gum and that I was done with my drug addiction no matter how I felt or how much I wanted one. The next few days I was a bit testy and cranky (more than normal) but once I had gotten through the first day I knew the next few days would get progressively easier and I also knew that I did not want to have to ever go through this day or this process again.

She should know that her body is done with the drug after a week or so but her MIND will mess with her off and on for a long time to come. (This will get steadily better.) She will find herself in a situation where she used to smoke and the urge will jump up even though it may have been months or even a year or more since she quit. Something will trigger an emotion or a memory and the same thing will happen. My way of dealing with those urges was to laugh at it and to take several deep breaths and thank God that I am able to take those deep breaths.

Next month will be three years clean--after being a nicotine addict for over 30 years.

I celebrate the anniversary of my first day clean. I think that is worth noting each year.

Try going to the Phillip Morris website, or join a drug study for a new product, they pay you for being involved. (Just watch out, they can be risky because of unknown side effects. May be bad for your health.) But, she has to be willing to stop first. If she is not ready, it won't do any good.

You can self teach and self apply EFT "Emotional Freedom Technique" which can release the addiction and allow your mom to give up smoking.

watch TV for a day and see how many stop smoking ads come up then call and order all of them and see which ones works or not

some hospitals or clinics offer free classes in helping to quit smoking...I know the Seventh-day-Adventist church would steer you in the right direction...they are all about "health"....make sure she has plenty of mints or hard candy to suck...if she has a problem with sugar...there are many that are "sugar free"...goodluck!
