You are all completely wrong! The # 1 vacuum ever is the Kirby!I used to have a dyson and thoes guys came into my house and proved that my Dyson was a peice of Crap! It doesnt really pick up anything...For instance..look at the machine..it only has one small hole for suction on the side...if that is the only place on the machine that sucks where is the dirt going that spins around? right back into the carpet..if you don't believe me Check out www.Kirby.com and have them prove it to you! it is seriously worth the investment.

I have owned a Kirby, beware of vacuum salesman and high prices, you can take almost any sweeper and vacuum over an area that you have swept with your own sweeper and still get dirt on the cruddy little white fabric they use to show you how much dirt was left behing by your sweeper, Kirby is big and bulks and heavy. From all that I have seen Dyson gets pretty good reviews and would not be afraid to purchase one if I needed a sweeper at this time. Currently I have two Fantom Thunders which work on the same principal as they Dyson, and they do an excellent job, we have two great danes and two dachshunds and they pick up the pet hair real well, so if you got the bucks go for the Dyson.

I have owned numerous vacuum cleaners and bought a Dyson 14 Animal last summer to replace a Hoover that had lost its oomph. A year plus later and it cleans as well and has as much suction as the day I bought it. The little part over the wheel by the intake can sometimes come loose and you will have little suction. It has its little issues, but I can't imagine living without one now.

I have heard of the dyson, but don't have the money to get one. I have had a kirby, a rainbow(works with water) hoover,Eurika, and others.
Kirby is big and bulky, but works good.
Rainbow- worked while I had it, but with the water, and having kids, if it is not emptied right away, the motor rusts up.
My neighbor has the Oreck and she loves that.
I guess I'm a die hard because I like hoover.
But the question I have to ask about the dyson is this. If there are no bags to empty at all, where does the dirt go from your floors? It has to go somewhere.
Good luck with this question, and if you get one. I have heard they run about $400.00, or so. Have a nice night.

I clean houses for a living and one of my customers has a Dyson. This is my opinion on it.
Good:
* light weight, easy to maneuver
* excellent suction
* no bags to empty
Bad:
*can't get under beds with it
* bare floors wand is extremely awkard to hold on to
* on-off button is in a place where you keep accidently hitting it when trying to pick-up and move vacuum
If you do get a chance to try it before you buy....DEFINITELY change to the bare floor wand and see if you can maneuver it around, you'll see what I mean....I find that to be very annoying and I would not buy one for that reason alone.
Another customer has a Kirby and I would never, ever buy one of those things.
Good points about a Kirby:
* good suction
Bad:
*everything else
Heavy, and awkward to manouver, doesn't clean edges well, changing heads to go from carpet to bare floors is a pain in the you-know-what, very expensive.
Also, don't go to the Kirby website to read what they say about a Dyson, or any other vaccuum for that matter. (I'm sure it'll be completely un-biased....LOL)
Go to store where you want to purchase the vacuum and try it there.

We have a canister vacuum and consider this to be the best cleaning tool. Our brand of choice is a Simplicity S class. Nice & quiet, but very strong suction, with a bunch of really smart designes to the carpet sunction attachment. It uses a air driven beater bar to assist in the vacuuming process.

I have an Oreck, and I think it is the best. It can go from thick carpet to tile floors and get it extremely clean. It is also very light, only eight pounds. I don't have any experience with Dyson though.

I have had a Rainbow for more than 15 years, it picks up every thing and I never buy bags, just dump out the water! I like it better than my Hoover, and that water traps all the dust and dirt to keep the air clean!

Why not use the Dyson first, and then go over the carpet with
the Hoover?

I have had alot of vacuum cleaners. (been keeping house 31 years) I still prefer a canister to a upright. Kirby was the worst vaccum I ever had. I like electrolux. I have had an Eureka for 9 years. It is the best one so far.
