I don't think they are standard Balkan. (I'm in Canada). In Biblical geneology Madai was one son of Japheth (who was one of Noah's 3 sons). Madai was the Medes, who formed the Medo-Persian empire. The Ukrainians have been identified as the Medes (Josephus etc). At least western Ukrainians. Medes are described by a bear in the Bible. But the Russians are now described as a bear. Where exactly are Medes, and does Hungary relate? In Ukrainian Hungarians are called Madiary. Note the name Darius as a Medo-Persian ruler. Ukraine has common names like Daria, Darevich.

Hmmm...I can't answer your question but I find it interesting. I was born in the USA of Hungarian refugees, and adopted. I hear very little about my ancestory. I'm in my mid-40's and am planning on visiting Hungary for the first time next year. It's even difficult trying to plan a trip there because of lack of travel agencies offering trips to that region.
Thanx for your geneological lesson. Good luck with an answer.
