I've checked the audio-in preferences for my mac. For some reason no sound is going in. As far as I can see the headphones are correctly hooked up to the speakers and microphone jacks on the back of my machine. Anyone else using a mac with a computer headset had this problem?

well said bryan, it is probably a problem in skype. but not always. so set the recording source to use your system soundcard. set the audio to record from the microphone.
I don't use a mac so i can't give you the exact solution just general advice here for any computer with a similer problem.
it could be that your mic is software muted go to your soundcards settings to check this. it could be that like with my nvida chipset the mic often will not pick up any audio if the sound is set abouve about 30 or 40% of maximum.
if you have an audio recording program like microsofts sound recorder in windows systems then use that and try to record your voice if you can rcord and hear your voice then the problem is more likely a skype problem so as already said double check the settings in skype. if that fails try re-installing skype download it then disconnect from the internet, and run a system wide anti-virus and spyware check, if no virus found turn off your anti-virus program for the duration of the skype install. once installed reactivate your av software and reconnect to the internet and tryu to set up skype audio again. remember in skype there is the free to use voice testing utility. i think there is even a sound set up utility from the help menu.
and like bryn said make sure there is not a mute button on your headset mic that is stopping you from being heard. finally talk in a normal to slightly loud voice. never whisper if your naturally softly spoken then you may have to use the mic boost function to pick up your voice.

good luck i hope this hellps.

You may want to check any preferences in Skype, such as what device to use, and you may want to make sure there isn't a microphone mute button or switch on the headset.

Are you sure that your microphones are functioning properly? Maybe there is some small component which has broken inside and therefore no voice is produced.

Try using another friend's microphone and ensure that your microphone is not faulty.

If nothing helps consult a technician.
