When you get the old gasket scraped off the floor flange, you sometimes also have to clean out the slots around the sides to allow the bolts to move to the point in the slot where it's wide enough for the head to come out. The bolts have an odd shaped head that allows them to be inserted into the large portion of the slot and then turned to be moved to a position opposite each other and line up with the holes in the commode. Sometimes the slots are so full of wax from the old gasket that it doesn't even appear that there is a slot. If you have a hardware or plumbing supply, Home Depot, etc, nearby, go buy a new set of bolts and you'll see the head configuration. It should help with the removal of the old ones.

Pull up the gasket, most of it will come up. Wear some disposable gloves, the gaskets are very sticky. The rest of the gasket will have to be scraped up using a putty knife. Good luck. I hope this helps.

use a putty knife to scrape the old wax ring off. Its a good idea to wear gloves and have a trash bag close by. It is not necessary to get every bit of the old wax off the flange, as the new wax will adhere to the old. just remove the bulk off the old wax. I would not recommend using any cleaning solvents, just scraping off the old wax.

Putty knife, and some good cleaner, might need a razor blade for scraping the old one off.
