It can not hurt. Couple of things to look out for. Here in California by law a new home comes with a one year warranty. If that is the case in your then it may not be worth the cost if it is a reputable builder. But for peace of mind still not bad thing to do. I have been selling new homes for 14 years and the only beef i have with these inspectors is that usually there is not a lot for them to find and i have some actually poke holes and damage the home in their inspection. Make sure you have a good recommendation of a home inspector and not rely on the phone book. The builder does not have to let them on the property and a walk through is not required by law. Technically it is their home till you close escrow. Good builders will not care and work with you. Though it is courtesy that most builders do so they can get a jump on the walk items before it closes. All the builders i have worked for in the paperwork says that you can not hold up a close because of walk items. Generally they are nickle and dime things and the builder wants to knock them out before you move in. Customer service does not like to move furniture if they do not have to. Most good builders will fix usually all the walk through items in the first 3 to 4 weeks. Do realize that you and maybe 20 other people may close in a 2 week period and it will take customer service some time to fix walk items. I alway tell my buyers that if there is a hole in the wall or the stove is missing come get me and i can help with big items but i have never had this happen. The independent home inspector is going to try to justify his price so it may be a lot of knick knack stuff that is usually written down and is done by the builder from the time you do your walk to moving in. My take is i would not waste the money if they have a one year warranty and a good builder.

It is always wise to have a home inspection when purchasing a home, weather it is old or new. Inspectors have a trained eye and know what to look for and can save you big buck in the end on anything major they find....if they find nothing at least you will have the piece of mind.

I work in the home-building industry in Northern VA. I would always reccommend to get an reputable home inspector.
Building a house in a long process and it will never hurt to have another set of eyes going over it.
Good luck with it.

Your lender should order an Inspection, as part of Loan if not ask them to- Realtor also likes this done, to protect from liability. Get one for sure, but make them pay for it.
