Look at the links - it might help you.

Personally, I have a very reliable repairman who does this work, and it is typically less than $70 to do it. I'm hesitant to dive into timing repair after making a problem worse on my older serger, breaking more parts and costing myself a couple more hundred dollars than necessary.

Some technicians might be able to offer some advice before you tear into it - sometimes all it needs is a new needle and a really good cleaning and oiling.

Take it to a sewing machine repair place. It's really not a job for the average Joe. I have a shop of sewing machines and I have them re-timed and cleaned every semester. It's usually not that expensive for one machine - have them do a complete cleaning and check everything out while they are at it.

happy sewing!
