In my experience when some girls say "we need to talk" it usually means they need to talk about something that I couldn't give a toss about but they want to make a big thing out of it for some reason, it makes me laugh every time someone says it.
I think the reason why they do it is because they've watched too many movies.

"We need to talk" is a way to say I have something that is very important to me and I need you to give me your full attention because we have a problem that needs to be resolved.
That's a different conversation from a how's everything going, whatchabeenupto phone call.
