i have unused paint

Sooner or later everything goes bad. It's true for a jar of mayonnaise to a prom queen's thighs . Your paint should be fine though. Just get a new container and strain it B4 you use it. The strainers are found at Home Depot and they get all the dried paint and debris out of the paint. Make sure you stir it well because the tinting pigments tend to settle at the bottom.

Before closing the lid, put a piece of saran wrap over the opening. Then seal the lid tightly. It will last for long time at room temperature. When reusing, be sure to stir thoroughly.

I have used 10+ y.o. latex and oil paint without any problem other than thinning.

Yes it can, as I had some. I think it gave off an odor that was unpleasant. Other than that go ahead and use it.

basically the can rots out and spoils the paint.
