I've got a Suzuki Alto and it doesn't seem to consume that much petrol considering the miles I do! If that doesn't appeal to you then the most ideal first car I suggest is a Vauxhall Corsa.

any of these smaller cars will be good just look for one that looks well kept up and if they got service records to show this all the better. Do a web search and get a list of things to look at when buying used cars or take it to a mechanic to see if he finds anything obvious wrong that you may not notice.

An old Toyota tercel is great on gas (as is anything made by Toyota. If it is an older Toyota, it is fairly easy to work on, too.
