I have a hard time understanding that trivia is important, because it's a contradiction in terms.
Trivia is, by definition, something that isn't important. Look it up the freakin dictionary, trivia is not important.

Trivia is a good conversation starter. (Look how many responses YOU already have - LOL). Who is the more interesting teacher? Is it the one who only teaches what is in the book, or the one who adds a little, juicy, trivial information about the topic? Start a little trivia discussion at a party, and people start talking and start to mingle and have a good time. Otherwise, you have people sitting there, looking bored, and getting drunk and obnoxious.
