To me, anything that lives is an animal. But I have met people who say that snakes, insects, and fish are not animals. I actually found definitions in some dictionaries that substantiated this. What do you think?

It's nice to see that everybody disagrees. And yes, I did go to public school and have a college degree. And I can spell and speak English, unlike most Americans. And I have all my teeth and hair.

Well.. that is a tough one....There are many different types of animals in the world. Many animals are quite similar to each other. Others are quite different. Animals can be classified based on their similarities. Continue on, and learn more about your fellow Earth inhabitants.

Generally, ALL animals are separated according to whether they are/have vertebrates or not. Animals with an internal skeleton made of bone are called vertebrates. Vertebrates include: primates, such as humans and monkeys; amphibians; reptiles; birds; and, fish. AND... those others are Invertebrates. These are those that don't have an internal skeleton made of bone. Many invertebrates have a fluid-filled, hydrostatic skeleton, like the jelly fish or worm. Others have a hard outer shell, like insects and crustaceans. There are many types of invertebrates. The most common invertebrates include the protozoa, annelids, echinoderms, mollusks and arthropods. Arthropods include insects, crustaceans and arachnids.

Thus.. YES.. insects are animals.. you are right!!

Insects are in the Kingdom, Animalia. So yes, they are animals. I think you are confusing the words mammal and animal. Animals consist of mammals, birds, fish, insects/bugs, reptiles, and amphibians. Not everything that lives is an animal though. Plants live and breathe, and they arent animals. Neither is bacteria. Some people think that humans arent animals. Go fig.

Any living thing is either an animal, a plant, a protozoan, a moneran (virus or bacteria), or fungus.

An insect is not a plant, it is not a single-celled organism, and it is not a fungus. Therefore, yes it is an animal. Anyone who says otherwise is full of s**t.

The link below will put this one to rest for good. Has some questions you can ask about insects.

Insects are definitely animals. So are fish, sponges, etc. Any organism with a nervous system, and cells without cell walls is an animal. Bacteria are not animals because they are prokaryotes, their cells lack mitochonidria, endoplasmic reticulum, and other organelles found within animal cells. Protista are similar to animals in that they can move around in an animal like way, but their cells are more plant like. They sometimes have cholorophyl and undergo photosynthesis.

Please, please, please. This is a post in support of the answer provide by "I know nuttin". It is amazing how people will answer that insects are not animals when the definition for animal has probably been around longer then those posting the message. I just wish that if people wanted to answer a question like this that they would just "google" it first rather then posting an incorrect answer. This is how incorrect information gets passed around and sometimes that can have harmful affects.
