The tree will appreciate it.

They make special tree fertilizers that are shaped like stakes--they simply push into the ground around the tree; they are available at most home-improvement stores, garden stores and plant nurseries.

verify the type of tree, as they all require different type of fertilizer. but buy all means fertilize!
