With obesity rising in Western countries to epidemic levels, would government funded and driven youth camps for all children, which would be dedicated to health and fitness help solve the problem? It could potentially be an extension of school.

If it does, there is a problem. Hitler created youth camps to help build his third reich for his 'european tour'.

so basically could we (and should we) solve the fat problems of youth with camps like these, without the racism and hate that was actively encouraged within the Hitler youth and without the rest of the world thinking we are vyeing for world domination?

We need to stop selling off school sports grounds, and stop giving our kids processed meals that we don't know the contents of.

PE should be a daily event for kids in school, especially as today's society dictates that most children don't walk or cycle to school any more.

Course not. How long would the camp be for? 1 week? 2, 3, the whole school holiday. How much fat would be lost and how long would it stay off? No short term fix can work what is needed is a long term strategy.

The only answer is education. A little for the children and an awful lot for the children.

Technically the Children and Young Persons Act would allow police and social workers to act against parents who allow children to become so obese it risks their health or well being.

Allowing a child to become clinically obese must be accepted as child abuse and dealt with accordingly.

Obesity in children should have everyone alarmed. It's not just a US problems. There are many factors to point the finger at.
#1 - computers....kids sit all day
#2 - Fast foods and junk food readily available and cheap
#3 - Gym class is a suggestion if offered at all
#4 - Kids don't do as much physical labor.(chores)
I'm sure there are more, but just can't think of them.
Fat camps are a interim solution. There needs to be more focus on the problem from the parents and at school, where most of their time is spent.

I think that PE should be done 3 times per week instead of 2 (scrap RE as neither the teachers or pupils enjoy teaching/learning it). Camps are a bit extreme...kids would certainly not enjoy an army style approach to losing weight which can be made fun through games and healthy competition (no pun intended!). Losing weight too quickly would also be bad for them so blitzing kids with stringent excersise routines that would exhaust them to the point of being too tired to do anything else (mental excersise is equally important). Kids should also be made more aware of the dangers of obesity in science and PSHE classes. Leisure facilities should also be made cheaper so kids would be more drawn to sports and lose weight without consciously realising it. Sports should be promoted in schools more so that kids will see sport as fun and not as a chore simply carried out to stay healthy (a necessary evil, if you will).

Even if we did have these camps, the kids would still have to go home and go back to the same situation. Currently in UK primary schools, children are being educated about the importance of health, fitness and healthy eating. They drink water all day and have lots of fruit and veg but schools have no influence on what they eat when they go home and exercise levels are still poor. Kids don't walk anywhere anymore.

I reckon that carting off loads of fat kids to a camp to be with loads of other fat kids would be soul destroying. Weight loss has to be controlled; done properly. The government should do their bit and give them all free laxatives and smokes.

No we need to deal with the cause not the effect.

Ban the school run and bring back cycling or walking to school.
