i want to get over and done with a simple website as soon as possible , want to leave fancy bits for later. havn't got a clue where to start from

The way I learned to build websites. I bought a book "Creating Web pages for Dummies" was basic, but I liked it. Also a website www.w3schools has great interactive tutorials. The best way to learn is to jump in and start playing around with html coding.

Learn to do a simple site BEFORE paying for someone to host it.

http://www.w3schools.com/ have some great tutorials for all sorts of programming and coding - I suggest you start with HTML. :)

Also an editor such as MS FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver can help you a lot.

Get an html editor from http://www.download.com/ and go to the bookstore and get a book about html programming. It's not too difficult.
