When Ted Williams retired in 1960, almost 46 yrs ago, he had a lifetime avg of .344. Since Ted retired the best lifetime averages are Tony Gwynn .338, Wade Boggs .328, and Rod Carew .328. The best average for a single season in the last 50 yrs is Tony Gwynn .394 in 1994.

Tony Gwynn did hit .394 in 1994 but since the season was shortened because of the strike that year he fell short of 502 TPA, I don't know if MLB recognizes his BA as an official record or not?.

Tony Gwynn .394 1994
George Brett .390 in 1980
Rod Carew .388 in 1977
Ted Williams .388 in 1957 at the age of 39
Stan Musial .376 in 1948
Ichiro Suzuki .372 in 2004
Barry Bonds .370 in 2002

Those were a few guys I could think of off the top of my head....I'm sure there are more...I know 1948 is more than 50 years ago, but, Musial played until 1963 and deserves to be mentioned...
