Internships are usually offered to students in college. If you are in college, check with your career advisement office, they'll know if any companies have requested interns. Otherwise, look online for local companies that interest you are are related to your career goals, and ask if they need an intern. Most places won't turn down free help, if you request properly.

I've been looking for internships too. I found a great company that places you as an intern and you most likely will be placed at the Pentagon in your field of study. I applied and was placed in the Graphics Department at the Pentagon last summer. It was a great experience and I learned alot. I live in the Washington DC area so it wasn't very far either. If you're interested in visiting DC (if you don't live there already) go to http://www.twc.edu/students/how_to_apply.shtml to apply. They offer housing too.

Also, do a google search for internships in your area. There are sites that give you places that offer internships. You can also try Craigslist.org and look for your area and under Jobs, see if anyone is offering internships.

BTW, some internships are very competitive, so apply early!
