Chances are you'll be visiting the mechanic and shelling out a few hundred dollars in repair bills if you try this.

Gasoline and Diesel are very different fuels... and the way they power a car are very different as well.

Gasoline engines use spark plugs to ignite the gasoline vapor. Diesel engines compress the liquid fuel so that they reach a peak temperature and pressure for the fuel to self-ignite.

Gasoline performace is measured in octanes whereas Diesel performance is measured in cetanes. High cetane diesels can self-combust very easily... but self combustion is something that gasoline engines aren't designed for.

Some people believe that adding a little bit of diesel to a tank that already has gasoline, helps lubricate the internal components of an engine... but this may prove to be a bad mistake if not researched further.

I've listed an article from StraightDope that goes into a lot more detail... definitely worth the read.

Don't drive with the diesel in your gasoline tank. Get it to a mechanic and have the tank and fuel lines drained, the fuel filter replaced, and check the spark plugs as well. (Well, depends on how much diesel is in there. A *very* small amount may not cause problems, as it is a common defect in gasoline, called "transmix," which occurs when the pipelines change products.)

The diesel fuel may cause ignition/timing issues, causing engine problems (car may not want to start or continue to run). The diesel fuel may have lubricants in it, gumming up your fuel line. The high sulfur in the diesel fuel will also contaminate/poison your catalytic converter (hence the black smoke coming from your tailpipe), giving you check engine lights and you'll be putting out more emissions.

I have heard of a fuel station that accidentially put diesel into the underground gasoline tank. There were a couple dozen cars that had filled up with gasoline, before the problem was noticed. All of those cars were soon not working (how the problem was found), and the station had to pay for the repairs. Darn I can't find the news article at the moment...

Depends on how much you put in. If you filled it up, you're going to have to drain it out. The car probably won't run on straight diesel, but it might stagger around on a mix, possibly run a bit hot, and idle and smoke very badly. I'm sure your fuel injectors and catalytic converter aren't going to like that dose of diesel fuel, but I don't think there would be any permanent damage. It's much worse to put gasoline in a diesel engine. Gasoline is more volatile and explosive.

Sorry for your car, I had a 64 chevy impala station wagon some years ago to let you know how long ago, it was when they had full service @ the gas stations, anyway the man put diesel in without paying attention. My motor blew up!! Better drain it and not drive it or you are going to have costly repairs.Good Luck..

drain the tank, refill with premium let idle for 15 to 20 minutes to get the cheap gas through the system, then try to drive... Edit: Don't listen to porky, he is totally incorrect, alcohol does NOT equal octane...gasohol is a poorer substitute for premium fuel in an engine requiring premium... second edit: captain awesome, some of these older cars that require premium have a lockout at engine knock, to where it wont accelerate much past idle if it senses a knock... they didn't have progressive timing retard back in 93

Your car will stop running. It will take anywhere from $1000 to $4000 to fix it. I know someone who did the same thing, and their car was never the same after that happened. I suggest having it towed to your mechanic, tell them what happened and go from there. Just DO NOT start it or drive it, or you could face losing your car altogether.

Your going to have to drain your gas tank and fuel lines. Recommend you take it to a shop. (put diesel in a 64 falcon once, so I know)

It makes lots of black smoke. If its mixed with regular gas you can just run it out if you don't mind the pollution
