Assuming you are setting this up as an emergency supply system, and the generator self-starts on power failure You need a control system which will Isolate the house from the mains on mains failure, this isolator when it opens to isolate house from mains, closes an auxiliary contact which completes the circuit to allow the generator isolator to operate. The converse must also be true, that is, on restoration of main power, the generator shuts down etc. Unless you are qualified for this type of work, do not even attempt it.....

You should hire a electrician for this job if you want it hooked so you can run house hold appliances and such. You have to have a special circut box that will cut off the power to the house so you can switch over to the generator, and vise versa, as any power that you don't use will feed back thru the power lines if you don't have this installed properly, If the power company had repairmen working on the power lines and your generator was running and feeding power back inot the lines you would be in for one heck of a lawsuit.

If you wish to connect it into the whole house then you may need to have an isolator switch/box installed which isolates the generator supply from the domestic supply so that the two do not cross, which could be dangerous. This then may need to be approved by the elec board.

1st step: You need to consult you local codes to see what they specify
2nd step: Check with the electric panel manufacturers such as Square D and GE, you need a special box that will disconnect your house from the power company supply, If you do not and an electricitian dies because you did not have the disconnect (even with low power) YOU will be held responsible.
3rd step: If you are unfamiliar with doing electrical work hire an electrician...they are trained to do this and you really don't want to be responsible for burning your house down or worse your death!

You shouldn't.

Run an extension cable off the generator to whatever it is you want to power.
